Under the auspices of His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ra's al-Khaimah, the Ras Al Khaimah Environmental Protection & Development Authority (EPDA) together with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission is pleased to announce The 6th International Conference on Global Warming: The Critical Role of Oceans, to be held from 4 – 7 December 2023, in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. The conference is being held in parallel with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) 28th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to be held in Dubai, UAE.

The conference will bring together experts from around the world the latest findings and solutions to help mitigate the impacts of global warming on our planet, especially the Oceans. We believe that understanding the dangers associated with global warming and identifying how we can work together is key to finding solutions.

The conference will feature presentations by a experts in the field of oceanography, ecosystem restoration, climate science and environmental policy. Along with keynote speeches, student presentations and panels attendees will have the opportunity to network and participate in interactive workshops on the latest technology and innovations to combat greenhouse gas emissions and promote climate resilience.

By the end of the conference, attendees will have a greater understanding of how global warming is impacting our oceans and what we can do to help solve this problem.

On the cusp of COP28, our open international conference brings together environmental scientists, conservationists, policy-makers, and the public to share knowledge on the current Ocean-related patterns, trends, and innovations in climate change mitigation,

and resilience. The conference will be interactive, dynamic and innovative, with a mix of oral presentations, discussion/working groups and poster displays. We encourage an international, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, and participatory audience to foster knowledge exchange, networking, collaborations, and progressive thinking to identify educational needs, and formulate plans and proposals for advancing a better understanding of the oceans and their role in climate change.

Together, we can make a difference in the fight against global warming.

Conference General Schedule:

Conference inauguration
The role of Oceans on Planet Earth:

Our oceans are not only the earth's largest ecosystem, but they also play a vital role in regulating the planet's climate, food supply, and overall health. In this session, we will delve into the complex and fascinating world of oceanography and marine biology to explore the crucial role that oceans play in sustaining life on earth. From understanding the ocean's biochemistry and marine geology, to exploring the impacts of climate change and pollution, this session will offer valuable insights into the importance of our oceans and the urgent need for their protection.

Healthy Islands and Oceans: The Key to Climate Resilience.

Islands and island communities are disproportionately impacted by climate change. Restoring healthy islands and nearshore ecosystems benefits well beyond the terrestrial ecosystem components. Linked, functioning island-ocean ecosystems can help increase climate change resilience for the 11% of the world’s global population living on islands. Nature based solutions, including the management of invasive species and recovery of native plants and animals, have the power to minimize catastrophic impacts to biodiversity and human communities, help island communities reach their sustainable development goals, and contribute significantly to the long-term persistence of these island homes.

Sustainable Ocean Transport and Coastal Development.

Ocean Productivity and Food Security

Ocean productivity plays a crucial role in ensuring global food security. The oceans are teeming with life, from microscopic phytoplankton to large fish and marine mammals. These diverse marine organisms form the foundation of complex food webs, supporting the growth and survival of countless species. Ocean productivity, driven by factors such as nutrient availability, sunlight, and temperature, determines the abundance and distribution of marine life. Sustainable management of ocean resources, including fisheries and aquaculture, is essential to provide nutritious food for billions of people worldwide. By understanding and preserving ocean productivity, we can protect and enhance food security, supporting both human livelihoods and the health of marine ecosystems. In this session we will explore the current status and threats to food ocean productivity and food security and ways to achieve sustainability under a scenario of global warming.

The Blue Economy

The blue economy has the potential to be a major driver of sustainable economic growth and environmental stewardship in the years ahead. However, to realize this potential, we must transform our approach to ocean-based investment and innovation. In this session, we will explore the key opportunities and challenges presented by the blue economy, and discuss strategies for unlocking its potential in a sustainable and equitable manner. Participants will hear from experts on the latest trends in ocean-based industries, from aquaculture to ocean energy to tourism. We will also discuss innovative financing models, leveraging public-private partnerships, and encouraging social impact investment. Using real-world examples and interactive discussions, we will explore the numerous opportunities for businesses to contribute to ocean sustainability while also generating financial returns.
